Regards the relationship of Capt. William B Russell of Milton to the Mrs. Russell mentioned
in The Alleta Clowes Clarke 1789 Diary.
It appears through a quick research of my records, that the Mrs. Russell mentioned many times in the diary is Esther Heaverlo Russell, born 16 February, 1747 in Broadkill Hundred Sussex county, Delaware, and, died 77 years later 31 August 1824, in Broadkill Hundred. She is a
daughter of Andrew, born Lewes 1722, died 1786, 31 December, and his wife, Sarah Palmer,
born 1727, died 1790.
In 1768 Esther Heaverlo married Emanuel Manlove Russell, born 2 September, 1743 at
Drawbridge, Broadkill Hundred, Sussex, Delaware, and, died 18 September, 1812, age 69, at Drawbridge. Both he and wife are buried at Zion Church Yard in Sussex County, Broadkill Hundred.
Esther and Emanuel had 7 children , including both Hannah , born 27 October, 1771, and, Lydia,
born 5 February, 1774, who are mentioned many times in the Alleta Clowes Clarke 1789 Diary.
They would be in their mid and late teens at the time of the mentions. Hannah Russell married Febuary 29, 1792 to David Pennewell.
Emanuel Manlove and Esther Heaverlo Russell, also had a son, Robert Heaverlo Russell,
born 18 June 1781, at Drawbridge and died 28 March 1859 at Drawbridge , age 78 . Robert
married to Jain Hazzard in 1809, who died in 1809 with no issue. On May 8, 1812, Robert Heaverlo
Russell, age 30, married Sarah Curtis Shockley, aka Sallie, and they had 9 children of record,
the 6th born, Captain William B. Russell, 1827 – 1872, our subject. Others were Samuel, Ellias,
Robert, Sarah, Captain Alfred, George, Manlove and David. Sarah Curtis Shockley, born 29 May 1792, Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex county, Delaware to Curtis and Elizabeth Truitt Shockley ,
who had 10 children, the last born in 1804
Captain William B. Russell, born 19 September, 1827, Milton, died at sea between
Pensacola, Florida and Port Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19 September, 1872, twice married to
sisters Elizabeth Robins and Mary Jane Conwell of Milton. He was the grandson of Emanuel and Esther Heaverlo Russell. Other ancestors are Phillip and Jane Potter Russel of Lewes, 1709
to 1747, Joseph born Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, 1682, married 1708 to Sarah Waring, died 4 December 1736 in Sussex Delawre, Phillip and Sarah Gush Russell, of Bristol England, and
Arthur Joseph and Joane Houlder Russell also of Bristol England.
Captain Russellwas Milton commissioner 1867 and in 1835 petitioned for a canal from
the Nanticole River to the Broadkill River. In 1824 and 1825 he was involved in the iron ore rush
in Sussex county, being a transporter. He also bought ship wrecks which he sold to carpenters for
the salt treated lumber.
Yes, the Mrs Russell of Aletta Clowes Clark's diary and Captain William B Russell of Milton
are relatives.
