FLYING
SCOTSMAN TRAIN
The
flying Scotsman is a passenger train service operating between
Edinburgh
Scotland and London England since 1862 on the East Coast
Main
Line operated by London North Easten Railway.
The
East Coast Main Line in the 19th century was many small
railroad
companies
the merged. The first 1862 Special Scotch Express departed
at
10 am, simultaneously, from London's “King Cross” and
Edinburgh's
“Waverley”
and was a 10 hour trip that included a lunch stop at York.
By
1896 the train was modernised with heating and dining cars. The 392
mile
trip was reduced to 8-1/2 hours. An A1 - 4472 locomotive hauled the
train
in 1928, non stop, now with on board meals and services, even a
barber
shop. By 1932 the trip was 7- ½ hours.
May
2011, the trip from Edinburgh to London fast service is now 4 hours,
non
stop service.
