ATLANTIC
STORMS AT REHOBOTH

1900
Wednesday,
August 8, 1900 the Rehoboth Beacon newspaper
reported a
heavy sea was raging and the beach was terribly treacherous
and four
children were washed out by rip tides , above and beyond
their depth.
Other beach goers and bystanders noticed them a three of
them were
rescued but the fourth one had been taken far from the beach.
According to
the Beacon a life boat was launched by three men,
however, the
life boat capsized and a railroad man, Mr. Elliott, W. R.
Hazzard of
Philadelphia and H. I. Schley of Baltimore were thrown into
the
treacherous ocean, Hazzard and Schley were able to swim to shore,
but Elliott
was swept farther out to sea. A doctor from Baltimore, Dr.
Bear, and a
standbyer from Seaford, Mr. Pennington set out in a fishing
boat and with
a great effort got Mr. Elliott and themselves back to shore.
The fourth
child who had been carried parallel along the coast
was rescued by
Ron Detweiler of Ridgely, Maryland on the beach
where she had
been washed ashore.
No lives were
lost Rehoboth remained a safe beach, and continued to
blossom.
