Lewes, Delaware December 2, 1941 :

The old Lewes Coast Guard Station, now facing the Atlantic at the Cape's has

been taken over by the government and is to become the Army and Navy headquarters

for officers at Ft. Miles.

Colonel George C. Ruhlen , commander at Ft. duPont , in company of Major

Ealoh Baker, Executive Officer of 261st National Guard Detachment at Ft. Miles

officially accepted the historic structure, used the past two years as the Belhaven Surf Club.

The officials said the building will be operation headquarters directing operations of

harbor defense at Ft. Miles and the sleeping quarters for officers on 24 hour duty.

The Belhaven Surf Club was owned by night club operator Samuel C. Pierce.
