MISS DELAWARE PAGEANT
AT
REHOBOTH BEACH
The
1968 Miss Delaware Pageant was held in Rehoboth's
Convention
Hall, Saturday. June 22, 1968 with a rehearsal the
night
before.
Miles
Frederick, executive director of the pageant, described the
twelve
contestants
as taller, with more varied talents than previous
contestants.
One is a modern artist and one is an aspiring concert singer.
Three
are 5'7 tall or taller,, five are over 20 years old. Only two
are from
out
of state and the first Delaware negro ever selected as a
contestant is
included.
Harriett
Jeglum of Rehoboth was the show producer , wrote the lyrics
for
the pageant show titled “ It's Today “ in honor of the
resorts 96th
anniversary.
There were two emcees , Bill Glynn , Wilmington's singing
mail
carrier, and Mrs John Townsend of Washington, Pennsylvania,
south
west of Pittsburgh, the former Jackie Mayer, 1963 Miss America.
Judges
were Nathan Zanbar, director of the New Jersey pageant, Mrs.
Charlotte
Shedd, Wilmington vocalist, John Cassada , Miss New York
pageant
producer, Leonard Panaggio, of Rhode Island and Sammy Ferro,
Washington,
d. C. band leader.
The
new Miss Delaware receives a $1000 scholarship, money for her
wardrobe,
a $1000 from Delaware General Assembly and the use of an
Oldsmobile
car.
