TOWER
HILL
REHOBOTH-LEWES
HUNDRED, SUSSEX COUNTY
SOME
FACTS OF TOWER HILL
Tower
Hill lies southwest of Canary Creek northeast of Nassau,
northwest
of Five Points. New Road bisects it as does the run of
Black
Oak, or Black Hog, gut flowing from Old Mill and/or the
Coolspring
Creek. Long time locals call the area “Hells Neck”.
It
is a 475 acre tract with history back to 1676 when the Duke of
York
granted
it to Daniel Browne. John Prettyman moved to Sussex in 1698
from
Accomack county Virginia and bought 200 acres of the tract to
farm
and harvest timber, then to trap it's marshes. It was 1926
when
the
Prettyman family , Dr. John Sheppard Prettyman, Jr., sold
the land
to
Ira Brittingham.
There
is local fear that the land, at least a part of it under the
ownership of
the
Groome Methodist Church in Lewes, will be developed and disrupt
the
integrity of the area.
