CAPE
HENLOPEN STATE PARK
1993
EXPANSION
Cape
Henlopen, Wednesday December 1, 1993 :
A
land swap between the John Gillis Townsend's, Jr. &
Company, and
Daniel
G Anderson, Jr., the state and federal government resulted
in
a
20% expansion of Cape Henlopen State Park was announced Tuesday
by
officials. 40 acres of surplus federal land was traded for 482
acres of
Townsend's
and 30 acres owned by Anderson, plus 140 acres of surplus
land added. The state park now contains 3761 acres.
Townsend
said they got the high ground and gave up the marsh. 80%
of
the new land is tidal wetlands. The land contains rare plants and
three
rare
bird species, the sedge wren, grasshopper sparrow and the black
billed
sparrow.
The
new land is located along Wolfe Glade and Holland Glade and
has
oyster and crab shell middens dating to 500 BC. Immediate plans
call
for nature programs and perhaps duck hunting permits.
