SLACK
TIDE
Another
instant research of a topic of discussion at Arbys 3 pm coffee
group at Wescoats Corner & Five Points Arbys.
Most
use 'slack tide' around here, however, it is also known as,
'slack water. Wikipedia also uses “ the stand of the tide”
and says it is a short period in a body of tidal water when
the water is completely unstressed and there is no movement
either way in the tidal stream, and occurs before the
direction of the tidal stream reverses. Slack tide does not
occur at low or high tide and in constricted waters may last up to
three hours.
Scuba
divers enjoy slack water since there is less likelihood of
drifting and underwater visibility is improved. Vessels will
improve their speed and find favorable navigation during
slack water. The strength of a current will also alter the
time and duration of slack water or slack tide.
The
Assateague pony penning schedule is based on the slack tide
period
every July.
