HISTORY OF CAPE HENLOPEN
AND BEYOND
1761 LOTTERY FOR
LIGHTHOUSE AT CAPES
Pennsylvania Gazette,
Thursday, December 3, 1761 :
Scheme of a lottery for
raising 3000 pounds to erect a lighthouse on Cape Henlopen
and to facilitate the
Navigation of the Delaware.
The want of a lighthouse
on Cape Henlopen has been much complained of by all that
are acquainted with Port
Philadelphia and with the sad experience each winter show the
necessity of providing
some shelter from ice in the dangerous season. Hitherto no
plans have been laid.
Commerce increasing, frequent accidents befalling shipping, it
has
been judged highly
expedient to think seriously of remedying these
inconveniences.
In order thereto it is
proposed to raise by the Lottery, 3000 pounds,
Pennsylvania
currency. As known by
everyone indebted to trade for his support it is expected that
especial
regard will be paid to so
useful an intention.
Merchant's and shippers
residing here n particular will doubtless give their assistance
and
those in other ports of
North America must acknowledge that such helps in our navigation
is not confined to
ourselves but be of general utility .
10000 tickets, at 40
shilling each is 20600 and a 15% deduction from the prizes.
Drawing to commence 11,
January next
