EAST NEW MARKET
East New market,
originally 'Crossroads' later 'New Market' settled 1660 on
an Indian
trail of Choptank's
going north and south. Renamed East New Market in 1827 .
Settlement was made after 1650 by Henry Sewell in a 1649
grant and emerged as a territory of Dorchester County. A map
by Augustine Hermann shows a small Indian Village
and fort. A Quaker,
John Edmondson, from Virginia, in 1660's appears to be the first
white
settler, was joined by
Colonel James O'Sullivane and his two brothers who became
recognized as the first
family of the area.
East New Market holds
nearly 75 early residences of original founders are excellent
examples of colonial architecture.. Churches stand at each of
the four entrances to town ,
Trinity Methodist, St.
Stephen Episcopal , First Baptist and Salem German
Evangelical.
East New market was
incorporated in 1884 with a commissioner form of government, and
the first mayor was Dr.
George P. Jones. The Cambridge to Seafor railroad came throught
town in 1868 and the
Eastern Shore railroad by 1898. Te town had a water works by 1917.
Brick sidewalks exist and
very little development is at hand giving the town the air of
the
19th century.
