NELLO TEER FIVE POINTS TO REHOBOTH HIGHWAY 1954.

REHOBOTH BEACH HISTORY

NELLO TEER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

FIVE POINTS TO REHOBOTH HIGHWAY

On the road again, between Five Points and Rehoboth, that stretch of road 5.618 miles,
which we all bitch about, crowded, slow, backed up, accident prone, beat to hell, and
whatever else that can be thought about. I don't think everybody knows when it was
constructed or by who. Today , it's just another road to get somewhere from somewhere else,
but mainly to the beach.

In the Thursday, April 15, 1954, Wilmington News Journal , it was reported by Colonel William A. McWilliams, Delaware State Highway chief engineer, that work has started on the new dual road between Five Points and Rehoboth, by the Nello L. Teer Company of
Durham, North Carolina..

The $999,557.00 construction will have two new concrete traffic lanes from Five Points to
Carpenters Corners. Now get that right, Five Points to Carpenters Corners, two NEW
traffic lanes. Then one NEW traffic lane from Carpenters Corners to Rehoboth, that will
parallel the existing roadway. Yes, it uses the old two way Rehoboth Highway, with homes and farms along each side. Now, to be sure you know, read the above again. Remember
the date, April 15, 1954.

Col. McWilliams has said there will be no interference of traffic during construction , but
a 35 MPH speed limit it posted ad will be maintained throughout the area during construction.

The Wilmington Morning News, Friday, April 16, 1954, reports the 35 MPH speed limit
is in effect and the work now in progress is the clearing and excavation for the four lane road
through a new location between Five Points and Carpenters Corners. The morning report repeats there will be no interference with the movement of traffic during construction.
