GERMAN SUBMARINE U-853
SALVAGED
Lewes, Delaware
November 18, 1968 :
A German submarine sunk
off the Rhode Island coast in WW II has been
raised and is being towed
to Lewes , Delaware was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer
Monday. There have been
reports the submarine contained a fortune in gold, cash and
Travelers Checks but this
has been discounted by the German Consulate in Boston but
that the bodies of the
German crew were still aboard.
The Melvin Joseph Co.,
of Lewes, raised the U-853 from it's resting place in
International Waters 8
miles off Port Judith, Rhode Island and being towed to the
Lewes Harbor by the
Joseph company.
The damaged condition
of the submarine has presented towing problems. The U-853
is only one of several
German U-Boats sunk off the East Coast in WW II.
