HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY OF
DELAWARE FOOTBALL
THE 1919 DELAWARE COLLEGE
TEAM
September 25, 1919, coach
Shipley says the team is the best in years and yesterday
the first scrimmage of the
season, sending his first eleven and second eleven through a
stiff
workout which was welcomed
by all players who showed more pep and dash and drew a large
group of students from both
the mens college and the womens college to cheer them on.
Coach sent the first team
line and second team backfield up against the second team line
and first team backs. The
first team line and second team backs took the ball to start.
They were
unable to move the ball,
lots of fumbles and savage tackles by Stewart, Plam, Winthrop
and
Tonkins. Then Shipley had
the first team and second team do battle. The second team
powerhouse
Stewart as fullback led
to advances. Bob Foulk at left end also showed up well and as
defense for
Sankie McCaughn, running
back, Shipley knew he had a pair of crack wingmen. At half backs
,
Plam and Winthop held the
ball well and other team lines will have trouble stopping them
this year.
Dick Holton will be this
years center and coach Shipley uses him as a roving center on
defense.
Murray is to be tackle and
has impressed the coach . Lank McCaughn , end, Bess Carter
tackle and
Marconnetti guard, are the
stonewall on the right side of the line and are veteran players
Franklin & Marshall
will be the first game at Newark.
