LEWES DELAWARE HISTORY
1902
THE FEBRUARY 28 1902 BOARD
OF TRADE BANQUET
With “Greater Lewes”
as the evening slogan, important Delawareans shared the
hospitality of the old
Pilot Town banquet which included a diamond back terrapin dish
served
Lewes style to citizens
who desire to transform the bustling town into a important
seaport.
It had been announced
by the Wilmington Morning News of the completion of an
electric light, water and
sewer system, all an important development to the town. The
electric
plant has a capacity of 65
arc street lights plus 1600 incandescent 16 candle power lights.
The
water system has 3 miles of
pipe, a 96000 gallon capacity with a pressure of 35 psi and
is fed
by 15 wells. The town
sewage system is also complete. Several streets have been paved,
over 100
homes built and two banks
came to town.
Charles H. Maull was
toastmaster. He mentioned that five years ago a progressive
element gained control in
Lewes and this gathering was to rejoice over what had been
accomplished.
Mayor W. H. Thompson,
after welcoming guest, also mention on the improvements and
that they met with
opposition but they were told to go back and sit down.
Governor Hunn also spoke
and he saw that Lewes folk were exceedingly prosperous.
Many other guest also spoke,
all to the affirmative. Dr Hiram R. Burton recalled the history of
the
town.
There was talk of a coal
pier to be built which would pour thousands of tons into the
bunkers
of many sea going steamers.
