WASHINGTON ALEXANDER VICKERS

1842 – 1930

CONFEDERATE ARMY/ U.S.LIFE SAVING SERVICE / U.S. COAST GUARD

During the 1888 blizzard or the Great White Hurricane, whichever you

you care to call it, Wahsington Alexander Vickers was the station keeper of the

Life Saving Service at Indian River, Sussex county, Delaware. Knowing

the surfman of Lewes, Cape Henlopen and Rehoboth stations were

overwhelmed by a large number of vessels in distress at the Delaware

Breakwater and even though the storm was still raging, Vickers took two

of his surfman of the seven crew he commanded and marched up the beach

to Cape Henlopen bayside, and joined in with rescue operations.

Washington Alexander Vickers was born in Seaford, Sussex, Delaware,

November 28, 1842, to Joseph Ptolemy T. Vickers and Mary Louise

Hackett Neal.

Washington Alexander Vickers married his first wife, Henrietta Jane

Wright, (1840 – 1908) around 1870. Their first child, a daughter, Mary

Hibernia, aka Bernie, was born 1870, died 1930, followed by Louisa

Dashields, aka Lulu, born 1871 died 1910, a son, Harry Martin Vickers,born 1873 died 1915, Annie Elizabeth, born 1875 and Ida born 1879.

He remarried after Henrietta's death to Joanna Brown, born 1849, he being 70, in 1912, she 63. The 1850 census at Seaford Delaware list, Washington Vickers, age 8,

in the household of John, age 45, and Margaret age 44, Cottingham,

and John, age 22, Charles, age 20, both Cottinghams, and a Fanny

Collins, age 25. The 1870 census list Washington A., age 27, Henrietta Vickers, age 29, home in District 2, Dorchester, Maryland, a farmer.

In 1880, W. A. Vickers, age 37, his wife, age 39, three children, Bernie, age 10, Lulu, age 8, and Harry, age 6, are home in Accomack, Virginia,his occupation, surfman, U. S. Life Saving Service.A 1910 census for Frankford, Sussex county, Delaware list 67 year old

Washington A Vickers, widowed, living with daughter Ida, married to Stan Short, and two grandchildren Amelia, age 2, and Stella, age 0, he being “Keeper” of the Life Savings Station. Washington Vickers, age 77, in \ 1920 is living on Bedford Street, Georgetown with wife Joanna Brown Vickers, age 71. Capt. W. A. Vickers, age 87, born 28 November, 1842

died 23 February, 1930 , Georgetown and is buried in Union Cemetery.

W. A. Vickers was a veteran of the Confederate Army , Company G, Maryland 2^nd Infantry
