HISTORY OF CAPE HENLOPEN
AND BEYOND
THE BREAKWATER &
FRANKFORD RAILROAD
PROGRESS IN SUSSEX
Frankford, Delaware,
Friday May 22, 1874 :
The southeast portion of
Sussex county commenced an era of development with the
construction of the
Breakwater & Frankford Railroad which will open a door to
travelers
and developers into a
hitherto little known section of the county.
The Breakwater &
Frakford Railroad commences at Georgetown, the county seat, and
runs thirteen miles
southeast through Georgetown, Dagsborough and Baltimore Hundreds
to
the Maryland line at
Selbyville where it terminates. On it's way to Selbyville it
will run
through tracts of pine,
white and black oak and soil of a deep sandy loam with a clay
bottom suitable for
growing strawberries and peaches. In Dagsborough Hundred there
is
water power available for
saw mills. On it's way it runs through Millsboro, Dagsbourough
and Frankford, all
sizeable towns.
