SUSSEX COUNTY AIRPORT
1941
Did you know, that in 1941,
Lewes, was in line for the Sussex County Airport that is now
located at Georgetown >.
Here is a part of that story.
Delaware WPA
administrator, Benjamin Ableman, made a proposal before the Lewes
Chamber of Commerce the
the Civil Aeronautics Airport of Sussex County be built
at Lewes with WPA and CAA
funds. He told that after being built the airport would
become the towns property
with earnings thereof, but must agree to be made available
to the IU. S. Government
in an emergency.
The Georgetown site was
approved last spring but the Levy Court turned it down because
they did not feel it's
location was in the interest of National Defense.
$286.500 is approved for
the WPA and CAA will furnish $160,000 and it is thought a
site near the new Army and
Navy fortifications at Lewes and Rehoboth will well serve
National Defense
requirements.
A site of 350 to 400 acres
is needed for it to have four 4000 foot runways.
