MAST:
A
mast is a tall spar, erected vertically on the center line of
a
ship or boat, to carry sails, spars, and derricks, navigation
lights,
signal yard, aerials and signal lamp. All ship mast
are
guyed. A guyed mast depends on guy lines for stability
and
to resist wind loads.
History
holds that the earliest foremast was on an Etruscan
pyxis
