1968 BISHOPVILLE BREEZE

BISHOPVILLE BREEZE OF 1968

When does a bad smell become air pollution is the question in a suit against the poultry

offal processing plant at Bishopville, Maryland which is headed to the U. S. Supreme Court for

the answer.

The bad odor breezes from the Bishopville plant just below the state line at Selbyville has

status with the 1963 Federal Clean Air Act which states interstate air pollution was subject to

federal laws. A previous law had to prove human health suffered. Now, bad odors can sicken
,
nauseate, cause sleeplessness and revulsion aka 'disgust.

Selbyville and lower Delaware and Ocean City, have another clincher, the smell adversely

affects business conditions and the Justice Department is ordering the Maryland Rendering plant

to stop stinking.

“It's hurting business, stop it” is the local battle cry.
