SNOWY OWLS

SNOWY OWLS

The Salisbury Daily Times for Sunday, January 7, 2018 had an article
about the Snowy Owl, the Short Eared Owl that are the big attraction
this year, bringing many bird watchers to Fowler Beach Road and the
Prime Hook Refuge.

The Short Eared Owl's had put on a rather good show just about dark
when they usually start hunting for supper. They had started flying about
3:30, allowing watchers an hour or so of day light for good photos.

The owls hunt the meadow voles, a rodent living in the marshes. These
voles had proved an explosion in vole population this year and attracted
more Short Eared Owls

Snowy Owls are rare in Delaware but a heavy breeding season in the
Arctic forced juvenile birds to seek food in other locations than regular
haunts, that being the Delaware Bay shoreline. Sort of trading sand dunes
for snow banks.

The watchers also caught a glimpse of a young bald eagle in the dunes
waiting for the owls to begin the hunt for their supper.
